Phone-detecting timer All timers Start a session

Privacy

The short version: there is no account, your phone’s motion readings never leave it, and your numbers stay in your browser. If you link your phone and computer, the timer passes between them through our server, and nothing is kept. Visits to the site are counted with Google Analytics.

Face down, on a phone

On a phone, Face down reads the phone’s motion sensor to tell whether it is lying face down. The readings are checked inside your browser tab and then dropped. None are stored or sent to us or anyone else. On an iPhone, your browser asks your permission first.

While a face-down session runs, the page asks your browser to keep the screen on, so the phone can’t lock itself mid-session. That stops when the session is paused, finished or reaches a break.

The QR code, on a computer

The QR code is drawn in your browser. It holds the address of the page you are on and the timer you picked (for example 25 minutes focus, 5 minutes break), so your phone opens with the same timer. It also holds a random link code, made new each time the page opens, so your phone can link to this page. Nothing else.

Linking your phone and computer

When your phone opens the QR code, the two pages connect through our server, so the computer can show your phone’s timer and you can start the next block or press Finish on the computer.

Only the timer passes between them: the setting you picked, how long it has run, when the phone was picked up and for how long, and the numbers on the end card. The motion readings never do. Our server passes each message straight to the other page and keeps nothing: no copy, no log. The link ends when either page is closed.

What the site loads

Everything the page loads, from the timer to the fonts, comes from this website, with one exception: Google Analytics, which counts visits. The timer itself sends nothing to any other website.

What is stored, and where

When you press Finish, your totals (number of sessions, session time, phone-free time, times caught and your longest stretch without touching the phone) are saved, and when you pick a timer setting, type your own lengths or turn the catch sound on or off, that choice is saved, in your browser’s local storage on this device. We never receive them. Clearing your browsing data for this site deletes them.

The end-of-session image is made in your browser. It is only shared if you save or share it yourself.

Accounts, cookies and tracking

There are no accounts and no sign-up. We use Google Analytics to count visits: which pages are opened, roughly where from, and on what kind of device. It sets its own cookies (_ga) to tell a returning visitor from a new one. It never sees your phone’s motion readings, your timer or your totals. There are no advertising scripts. Our host keeps standard server logs of page requests, as every web host does.
